Two light seasons side by side

Light Spring vs Light Summer: how to tell them apart

Light Spring and Light Summer both look best in light, delicate colours and are overwhelmed by dark, heavy ones. The difference is temperature and clarity: Light Spring leans warm and fresh, Light Summer leans cool and soft. Here is how to see it on your own face.

Am I a Light Spring or a Light Summer?

If peach, warm ivory, coral pink and buttercup yellow make your skin look fresh, and gold looks natural, you are closer to Light Spring. If powder pink, soft white, lavender and powder blue do that, and silver looks better, you are closer to Light Summer. If both work, you sit between the two: the shared light neutrals are safe, the warm or cool accents are what to test.

Which of the two are you closer to?

Four quick questions to answer in daylight. They point you toward one of the two; a photo settles it.

01Which metal flatters your skin more?
02What's your natural hair colour, without dye?
03Which colours make your face look fresher?
04How strong is the contrast between your hair, eyes and skin?

The app reads your season from a selfie and shows hair and lipstick shades on your own face.

How it works

Three steps for a fair comparison

  1. 01

In daylight and without make-up, hold warm ivory and then soft white under your chin. The one that makes your skin look smooth points to your temperature.

  2. 02

Compare coral pink with powder pink. Light Spring skin looks livelier with coral; Light Summer skin looks clearer with powder pink.

  3. 03

Try gold and then silver jewellery. If two of the three tests point the same way, that is your season of the pair.

Why these two are easy to confuse

Light Spring and Light Summer are neighbours on the twelve-season wheel. Their strongest quality is the same, lightness, and their undertone is only mildly warm or mildly cool. Fair skin, light hair and light eyes are common in both.

The difference shows when you compare a warm, clear light colour with a cool, soft light colour of the same lightness.

Three colour pairs to compare

Hold each pair under your chin in daylight and choose the one that makes your skin look calm and even, not the one you like more.

  • Warm ivory or soft white: ivory points to Light Spring, soft white to Light Summer.
  • Coral pink or powder pink: coral points to Light Spring, powder pink to Light Summer.
  • Peach or lavender: peach points to Light Spring, lavender to Light Summer.

When you sit between the two

Then the light neutrals both palettes share, such as soft beige, mint and rosy pink, are the easiest colours near your face; keep clearly warm or clearly cool shades for accents.

A photo-based analysis compares your colouring with both palettes. When a photo cannot decide, the app shows both seasons so you can compare their palettes on the same photo.
